Runway Edits? No! Menswear? No! Perhaps a feature on the first McQueen collection since Sarah Burton found she had some incredibly large shoes to fill after the untimely death of McQueen in spring 2010!
I tried writing on all these subjects, but they seemed too familiar, too same old same old.
Start as you mean to go on!
With a deep burgeoning passion for the Avant Garde and my penchant for designers like, McQueen, Hussain Chalayan, Viktor and Rolf and Gareth Pugh to name a few, I wanted to focus upon a poineer of Avant Garde fashion, a visionary in his own right and a major influence on innovative and fantastical fashion.
That person is Leigh Bowery!
Featuring on the Cover of the latest edition of the Acne Paper, it is definately high time that this provocative and vibrant muse of Avant Garde fashion is celebrated.
Lady GaGa! Nicki Minaj! Boy George! Beth Ditto! I could go on..... These famous fashionistas and fashion forward fellas are all following the lead from the late, great performance artist, fashion designer, model and all round girl/guy about town.
Leigh Bowery! Dead serious when it comes to
the Ten Gallon Hat!
GaGa!
Nicki Minaj!
Boy George!
Weird, wonderful, grotesque and truly original! Leigh's vision of fashion as an art form shows gravity defying silhouettes, textures that make you wince at the touch and make up that is an art form all of it's own.
After his death in 1994 from an AIDS related illness, the legacy of Leigh Bowery lives on!
Pam Hogg!
Lianna Sheppard!
Alexander McQueen!
Viktor and Rolf!
Love him or hate him! It is undeniable that Bowery's looks and designs make for thought provoking and compelling viewing.
Often left to drown in the pool of obscurity it is important that Leigh is recognised for his contribution to the art community and the fashion community alike!
Not partial to a sequinned gimp mask? Not keen on safety pinning your cheeks together in the name of self expression? No? Then let others to it for you! Let people like Leigh and the likes of GaGa and Hussein Chalayan take you to the world of the grotesque, the bizarre! It's escapism at it's most lavish and we should celebrate it and enjoy it!
